A long video, but worth the watch. Henry is in a nursing home and doesn’t respond to stimuli. He has a hard time hearing people and remembering who people are. But watch his face light up (2:35) when he listens to music from his era.

It’s a beautiful thing, what music can do for people.

I made it all the way until he sang before I started crying.

When I was in high school, sometimes my family would visit my great grandmother who had advanced alzheimers. We would sit amongst all the patients and there was one woman,a musician, who couldn’t play piano on her own anymore. One of the care assistants or volunteers would sit at the bench with her and play. Even now, I remember seeing how her face would light up and how she would follow along, sometimes playing simple duets, other times with her hands held just above the keys.

I’m not really surprised that Michelle Lee (above in an earlier episode) did not get enough text votes to beat Lee Seung Hoon, though she got drastically better judge stores. I am surprised, however, that JYP called a spade a spade and an anti-black Korean society an anti-black Korean society. I mean, come on, the judges knew, the audience knew even Lee Seung Hoon (who has consistently received low scores from the judges) knew, that Michelle was the better contestant. I’m holding out hope that she’ll get taken on as a trainee anyway.

I should probably be less invested in television, I can’t really understand.

I saw a conversation about Indians right to reclaim the swastika on my dash earlier, but I can no longer find the convo. (link anyone?) It reminded me of the usage of the Swastika amongst ‘talented tenth’ leaders in the 1920s. I’ve pulled this image from a 1921 issue of the Crisis. The swastika appeared as a border in nearly all the issues from 1921-1922. I’m not sure if this appropriative usage was/is acceptable or not, but I found it interesting. It feels a little off to me, but I’m open to hearing other opinions.

On March 17, twelve years after she survived a brutal acid attack at the hands of her husband, Fakhra Younas committed suicide in Rome, Italy. After the strength and grace with which she not only survived such a horrific attack, but also a denial of justice as her husband was acquitted and a self-imposed (but most likely necessary) exile, I can only hope that she is at peace now.

She shared her story in her autobiography Il Volto Cancelloto (The Erased Face) but I don’t believe it has been translated into English yet.

Audre Lorde
Quote
